NerdWallet App Illustrations

The home screen is the first entry point of NerdWallet’s mobile app, providing users with an overview of their finances. The screen is very data-heavy, and the team identified that there was an opportunity to insert some of NerdWallet’s brand personality into the app through illustration, and make the experience feel more engaging and human. 

The challenge —
NerdWallet approached me to create a unique illustration for the home screen for each month from August 2018 - January 2019, depicting a seasonally-appropriate theme. The dimensions of the illustrations were fixed, and due to the small scale it was crucial to find a careful balance of detail, using it sparingly and intentionally. 

This project was kicked off as NerdWallet was in the process of evolving and defining their illustration style. They had already defined some key principles and color palettes, however these illustrations were able to help shape and develop the style, and push it forwards.

Process —
I worked on this project as a contract illustrator, collaborating with the product design and brand teams at NerdWallet. After working together with the internal teams to ideate on themes for each month, I then sketched out several approaches for each illustration, and then developed them further, exploring color palettes and composition.
